SUM Hospital Owner Manoj Naik Arrested

Bhubaneswar: Sum hospital owner Manoj Naik has been arrested late last night. At around 3.30 am , Manoj surrendered before the Khandagiri police.

He was then taken to an undisclosed location by the police for interrogation, twin city police commissioner Y B Khurania informed Ommcom News. He will be produced in the court later in the day.

Police had issued a search out notice against Manoj and his wife last evening after 21 people died in the SUM hospital fire tragedy.

On Tuesday a day after the tragedy took place, fire safety dept had filed an FIR in the Khandagiri ps over violation of all fire safety guidelines by the SUM hospital though the dept had recommended them in its audit in 2013. Surprisingly the health dept continued to issue no objections certificate to the hospital even after the hospital had repeatedly violated all safety norms.

The police had already arrested four staff of SUM hospital on Tuesday evening including the its medical superintendent but no action was taken against Manoj who is the trustee of SOA deemed university under which the hospital is managed. After repeated public and media pressure the Odisha government was reportedly forced to issue directives to Bhubaneswar police to immediately arrest Manoj Naik after which he had to surrender.

Now the big question is, what action will be taken against SUM and 565 odd other hospitals in the twin city which are grossly violation the fire safety guidelines and deliberately putting people’s lives in danger.

Will the deaths of the 21 patients at SUM hospital ever be a lesson to one and all !
