The Soaring Demand Of Earthen Pots With Rising Temperature In Odisha | Odisha News

The Soaring Demand Of Earthen Pots With Rising Temperature In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Mercury is about to touch 40 degrees Celsius in Odisha and people are increasingly craving refreshing drinks to prevent dehydration. Despite the easy availability of numerous juice stalls and packaged cold drink bottles, a glass of filtered water from an earthen pot still holds unmatched popularity. Though most households own refrigerators, people still prefer to drink water from earthen pots during summer. OMMCOM NEWS takes a look at the thriving summer business.

Paresh Sarkar of West Bengal, who has set up a roadside stall that is thronged by around 40 customers per day said, “I shifted to Odisha eight years back and I have been involved in the business of selling ‘Mathia’ (earthen pots) since then. On days of extreme temperatures, the business is good. But on cloudy days, the sale is underwhelming.”

Ranging between Rs 100 and Rs 500, Sarkar’s earthen pot shop is frequented by couples, families and even college students who carry the pots to their hostel rooms. To keep things more hygienic and clean, the pots now come with taps for people who do not like dipping glasses in the pot. The ban on plastic products from 2nd October last year has also encouraged people to shun plastic water bottles and switch over to clay-made pots and bottles.
