President Kovind Arrives In Odisha

Bhubaneswar / Berhampur: President Ramnath Kovind, who arrived here this afternoon on a two-day visit to Odisha was accorded a warm welcome at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) by Governor Ganeshi Lal and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Pratap Sarangi, Director General of Police B K Sharma and other top officials of the State also welcomed Kovind at the airport.

The President immediately after his arrival at BPIA left for Gopalpur in Ganjam district by IAF chopper.

According to reports, after his arrival at Rangeilunda airstrip Kovind left  for the Army Air Defence College at Gopalpur.

The President will spend the night at the Presidential suite  of the Army Air Defence College.

Odisha Brazen Display Of Guns At Private Party In Puri, Blank Fires Shot

Puri: At least six rounds of blank fires were shot in the air at a private party which was reportedly taking place in Puri recently. The entire episode, which was captured in the mobile camera of an onlooker has created a flutter after the video went viral on social media.

According to sources, the incident took place during a cultural event at a recreation ground under Town Police limits. There were hundreds of spectators watching the event when all of a sudden three people on the stage with firearms shot blank fires.

Sources said, two among them were private security guards of the person in the center stage. Local police have already got a copy of this video and investigating into the matter.

SP Uma Shankar Das said, “The matter is being thoroughly investigated. Whether the firearms were licensed and if licensed, under what circumstances these people wielded the guns, will be probed.”

Dreaded Criminal Injured, Nabbed In Kendrapada Encounter

Kendrapada In an encounter between miscreants and Police at Garapur of Kendrapada district, dreaded criminal Hrusikesh Malik was injured and later nabbed on late Saturday.

As per Police records, Malik was part of a gang of four. They were returning from Aul after a loot.

The Police acted based on a tip-off and a team headed by Kendrapada SP were lying in wait for the gang. In an exchange of fire, Malik received bullet injuries on his left leg while the other three managed to flee from the scene.

Malik has been admitted to Kendrapada District Headquarters Hospital and search for the absconding is on.

OAVS Advisor To Review Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas In Ganjam

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan (OAVS) Advisor Bijaya Kumar Sahoo is scheduled to visit some of the Adarsha Vidyalayas in Ganjam on Wednesday during the second day of his visit to the district to review the status of model schools.

Sahoo along with OAVS Director Raghuram R Iyer and Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange on Tuesday addressed the Principals of 22 Adarsha Vidyalayas, the Block Education Officers (BEO) of 22 Blocks and the District Education Officer (DEO), in a two days District-level Review Meeting.

He briefed about the mission of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for OAVs, that is to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the students, through the 5T approach like technology, transparency, teamwork, time and transformation. He also outlined the importance of the Adarsha Vidyalayas in building a better future for the students through technology, teachers training, infrastructure, enterprise resource planning (ERP), updated website etc.

Bhubaneswar: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is all set to launch a massive campaign for the bye-election to the prestigious Bijepur assembly seat.

The seat holds great importance for the BJD since its party supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had vacated it after winning by a huge margin in 2019 general elections.

Naveen who had contested from two seats Hinjili and Bijepur in the 2019 general elections had vacated Bijepur while retaining Hinjili, his traditional seat.

Ever since the fielding of deceased Congress MLA Subal Sahu’s widow-Rita Sahu as the BJD candidate for the Bijepur bye-elections in 2018, Naveen has been taking personal interest in Bijepur’s development.

Odisha Forest Officials Seize Leopard Skin, 6 Arrested

Deogarh: Forest department officials in Odisha’s Deogarh district have seized a leopard skin late on Monday night and arrested six persons in this connection.

The leopard skin was seized during a raid by Forest department officials in Chhatibarghat village under Tileibani section of Deogarh Forest division said a Forest department official while adding that six persons have been arrested.

We have seized a leopard skin from Chhatibarghat village and have arrested six persons. During the course of our investigation, we came to know that these persons would have smuggled the hide to either Rourkela or Sambalpur,” informed Deogarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kshyama Sarangi.

She added that the involvement of people from other districts cannot be ruled out since the arrested include people from other districts.

Excise Department Lays Down Stringent Laws For Bhubaneswar Dance Bars

Bhubaneswar: The Excise Department has laid down stringent rules for having female dancers in employ of dance bars of the Capital city. Excise Superintendent Prasanna Acharya on Tuesday briefed regarding the new regulations.

Expressing the department’s objective, Acharya said, “The dance bars already have valid licenses, they just had restriction on induction of female bar dancers. The bars simply need to avail permission from the Excise department as per the Supreme Court’s guidelines, the High Court’s direction, and Government’s approval.”

“The bars will have to adhere to the guidelines under the Excise Act 44(5) to organize the performances. They also have to intimate the Excise Department of the dancers they have inducted and submit copies of their identity proof and fitness certificate. Additionally, they will be responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the women in their employment.”

“We will be conducting surprise visits to the seven bars and action will be taken against those who will be caught flouting rules. Our field officers have been informed accordingly,” concluded Excise Superintendent.

Odisha Eve-teasing Escalates To Double Murder In Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Two brothers were killed in a group clash on late Monday over a case of eve-teasing at Bhandarimal village under Jujumara Police limits here.

The deceased have been identified as Shakti Bhushan Kumra (35) and his brother Aravind Kumra (25). Two people from the same family were also injured in the clash. They are under treatment at VIMSAR, Burla.

As per reports, the deceased’s sister was eve-teased by a group of youths. They confronted them which led to a violent clash between the two groups. The clash resulted in the death of two and another two were critically injured.

Sambalpur SP Kanwar Vishal Singh is inspecting the scene along with his team. SP informed that they already have four including the prime accused in custody and search for the rest is underway.

Youth Rapes Pregnant Woman Over Previous Enmity In Balasore, Held

Balasore: A seven months’ pregnant woman was abducted from her house and raped by a youth who was nabbed by police in Soro block of Balasore district on Wednesday.

Reportedly, the woman and her sister-in-laws were fast asleep in their house on Tuesday night when the accused Kumandar Nayak (22) stealthily entered the house and abducted the woman over some previous grudge.

He took her to his house in the village and assaulted her, sexually and physically. While her family members rushed to her rescue, Nayak attacked them with a sharp weapon. Later, with the help of villagers, they rescued her on Wednesday morning.

It was after the family members lodged a complaint at Soro police station, the accused was held. As per last reports, the woman has been sent for medical examination following which her statement will be recorded by the police.

POCSO Court Awards Death Sentence To Salepur Minor Girl Rape Convict

Cuttack: The convict in rape and murder of a minor girl from Salepur was awarded death sentence by a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Cuttack on Thursday.

The court had on Wednesday convicted the accused Mohammad Mustaq under sections 363, 302, 367 (a) & (b) of IPC and 6 of POCSO Act but had reserved the judgement.

Reportedly, the 6-year-old girl who was reported missing after she went to a shop near Jagannathpur Nodal Upper Primary school to buy chocolates was found unconscious in a school compound in Salipur area of Cuttack on April 21 last year.

The accused lured her away with a chocolate and after raping her on the school premises, he attempted to kill her by throttling her. She had been rushed to a hospital in Salepur, but later shifted to the SCB.
